Poetryville
Welcome to Poetryville poetry explorers! My name is Eric and I'm your driver and poetry coach on this fun-tastic journey. In Poetryville we will learn what a poem is, find out about some famous poets and read some of their work before travelling on.
What is a poem?

A poem is a collection of words that express thoughts, feelings and emotions. Someone who writes a poem is called a poet. Anyone can be a poet. Poets use language and imagination to communicate their ideas in verse.
Famous Poets

Probably the most famous poet is Shakespeare. His plays and poems are still studied in secondary schools today even though he died in 1616 – that’s nearly 400 years ago!

There are lots of modern poets such as Roger McGough, Michael Rosen, Roald Dahl, Valerie Bloom, Allan Ahlberg, Janet Ahlberg, Wes Magee and Kit Wright to mention but a few. Perhaps you have read some of their books. Why not search for one of these poets on the Internet to find out more? Next time you are in the library pick a book of poems to read, they are great fun to read out loud to your family and friends. Click here to read some of Eric’s favourite poems for children.
